MOT Categories

The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test categorises vehicles based on their type and age, ensuring they meet safety, roadworthiness, and exhaust emissions standards. Categories include Class 1 for motorcycles up to 200cc, Class 2 for motorcycles over 200cc, Class 3 for three-wheeled vehicles up to 450 kg, Class 4 for cars (up to 8 passenger seats), taxis, and ambulances, Class 5 for private passenger vehicles (with more than 13 passenger seats), and Class 7 for goods vehicles (weighing between 3,000 kg and 3,500 kg). Each category has specific requirements tailored to the vehicle’s use and design.

What’s Covered in the MOT

The MOT test covers several critical aspects of a vehicle to ensure its safety and compliance with environmental regulations. Key components inspected include the vehicle’s lights, steering and suspension systems, brakes, tyres and wheels, seat belts, body structure and chassis, exhaust and emissions, mirrors, and fuel system. Additionally, checks are performed on the vehicle’s identification, including the registration plate and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), ensuring they are legible and match the vehicle’s documentation. This comprehensive examination ensures that vehicles on the road are safe to operate and environmentally sound.

Retest Conditions

If a vehicle fails its MOT test, a retest is required to confirm that the necessary repairs have been made and that the vehicle meets the required standards. The conditions for a retest depend on where and when the repairs are conducted. If repairs are completed at the same test centre within 10 working days, a partial retest covering the failed items only is often offered at a reduced fee or free of charge. If the vehicle is taken away for repairs and brought back to the same centre within one working day, only the failed components are checked. For vehicles not returned within the stipulated timeframes or taken to a different test centre, a full MOT test may be required, incurring the standard test fee.
